Motorcycle theft rates are arising dramatically. They are expected to continue rising due to the explosion in sales and the relative ease with which they may be stolen. The rider cannot expect anyone to protect his machine and must assume the responsibility himself by installing security that will deter, delay and ultimately beat the determined thief. The AUTOWATCH 550Rli alarm-immobiliser is a tiny microprocessor based unit offering a very high level of security for your motorcycle at a budget price. The unit is suitable for all motorcycles, regardless of whether they incorporate magneto or conventional CDI ignition systems.

At the heart of our system is a tiny microprocessor, which constantly monitors the status of the bike. Should a change of state in any of the protected circuits be detected the alarm will either emit a warning tone to alert the thief of the presence of the alarm, or the alarm will sound at full volume for a period of thirty seconds.

Thirty seconds after you turn the ignition off the immobiliser will automatically arm. In this condition two vital circuits on the motorcycle are disabled and the machine will not start or run. In this mode there is nothing for the rider to do to secure his bike, everything happens automatically {passively). In order for the bike to start the microprocessor must receive a valid code from one of the two-button remote controls. The impaired circuits are then reconnected and the bike runs.

Alternatively, when leaving the bike the rider may arm the alarm by simply pressing a button on the remote control. In this mode the immobiliser is activated as above but the alarm is also armed. Arming may be confirmed by connecting the (supplied) indicator relay. This microprocessor requires thirty seconds to stabilise, after which time the system is fully functional.

The system incorporates a shock sensor and a tilt sensor. The tilt sensor accepts the inclination at the time of arming as the reference and a deviation from that angle will trigger an alarm condition. If the detected change is small or the rate of change is slow, then an audible warning is given for approximately four seconds to deter the would-be thief. If the rate of change is maintained or quickens then a full alarm condition is generated. The shock sensor functions in an identical manner, a light bump causing a warning, a heavy bump triggering a full alarm.

One or more auxiliary triggers may be connected. This may be if the machine is taken out of neutral, the side-stand is released, or a compartment (e.g. pannier) is opened. On this trigger the alarm will instantly sound a full alarm. If the indicators have been connected they will flash for the duration of the alarm. A 'hot-wire' (bypassing the ignition switch) circuit will also trigger a full alarm. During all of this, immobilisation of the machine is maintained.

Two ergonomically designed remote controls are supplied with the security system. Each remote control has two buttons, which perform identical tasks. Either button may be used to arm or disarm the system, which ensures easy operation of the system even when the rider is wearing gauntlets. The remote controls are completely waterproof and utilise lithium batteries for long life. A two-year warranty is included.

However well you protect your motorcycle electronically, the option is always there for a thief to simply lift your bike into the back of a van. To combat this, we strongly recommend that a high-security chain or ground anchor is used to prevent removal of the machine. Most thieves will move on to an easier target if security of the machine is obviously mechanical and electronic - they will rarely allow themselves the time necessary to achieve their goal.
